The Walter Adams Framing Holiday Gift Guide: 7 Creative Ideas

Looking for a memorable gift? A favorite photograph, a treasured family keepsake, or a small piece of art can become something extraordinary with the right frame. Beautiful framing is a gift in itself! From luxury photo frames and charming miniature keepsakes to one-of-a-kind custom framing projects, we’ve gathered some of our favorites into a holiday gift guide to inspire your shopping and decorating this season.

A framed heirloom makes a beautiful gift. We framed this tapestry family heirloom in an Antique Brass Arielle frame from Omega Moulding. The artwork is float mounted and sewed into the mat which can safely be removed if needed. For textiles like this one, we sew down each piece so that no adhesives are used to secure the art.

Holiday Gift Guide: 7 Thoughtful Gifts & Festive Framing Ideas

1. Custom Framing: A Unique, Personalized Gift

Few gifts are as personal as something chosen, designed, and framed specifically for someone you love. Custom framing transforms meaningful photographs, artwork, and memorabilia into beautiful pieces that can be displayed and enjoyed for years. It’s also why custom framing is at the top of the list in our holiday gift guide!

Some of our favorite holiday gift ideas include:

  • A favorite family photograph: Give grandparents, parents, or loved ones a beautifully framed memory from a special occasion.
  • Children’s artwork: Turn a colorful drawing or handmade masterpiece into a meaningful gift for a parent or grandparent.
  • A handwritten recipe: Preserve a beloved family recipe in a frame that makes it worthy of a place in the kitchen.
  • Concert tickets or memorabilia: Celebrate an unforgettable experience with a custom display featuring tickets, photographs, or other keepsakes.
  • Vintage photographs: Give an old family photograph new life with elegant custom framing.
  • A collection of memories: Use a multi-opening mat to bring together several photographs, perhaps showcasing family milestones, travels, or generations.

The details make all the difference. Our designers can incorporate sophisticated matting techniques, including double and triple matting, float mounting, and decorative accents.

Holiday reminder: November 18 is our deadline for custom framing projects needed in time for the holidays. We encourage you to bring in your projects early so there’s plenty of time to explore your design options.

2. Frame Your Holiday Décor

Custom framing isn’t just for gifts! It’s also a beautiful way to decorate your home for the season. When it comes to decorating for the season, custom framing offers creative ways to bring warmth, personality, and a little holiday magic into your home. Consider bringing out your favorite holiday memories and traditions in a way that feels thoughtfully curated rather than temporary.

A few festive framing ideas include:

  • Favorite holiday cards: Frame a particularly beautiful holiday card, vintage greeting, or collection of sentimental cards from family and friends.
  • Holiday photographs: Create a seasonal gallery wall featuring favorite family celebrations, childhood Christmas mornings, or winter landscapes.
  • Vintage holiday artwork: Display antique holiday illustrations, nostalgic postcards, or seasonal prints in elegant frames.
  • Family holiday recipes: Frame a handwritten cookie recipe or treasured holiday dinner menu to display in the kitchen.
  • Holiday textiles: Display a small embroidered piece, needlepoint design, or meaningful seasonal fabric in a custom frame.

Matting offers another opportunity to introduce holiday color and texture. Rich greens, warm reds, metallic accents, and elegant fabric mats can complement seasonal artwork beautifully. For a more understated approach, neutral mats paired with gold, silver, or natural wood frames can create a timeless presentation.

The best part? These framed pieces can become part of your family’s decorating traditions, brought out and enjoyed year after year.

3. Luxury Photo Frames: An Elegant Gift for Anyone

A beautiful photo frame is one of those rare gifts that’s both practical and deeply personal. Pair it with a meaningful photograph, and it becomes a keepsake that will always have a place in someone’s home.

Our collection includes a variety of sizes, finishes, and materials, from sleek contemporary designs to ornate, decorative styles. Choose something that reflects the recipient’s personality or complements their home’s interior design.

A luxury photo frame makes a particularly lovely gift for newlyweds, new parents, grandparents, close friends, or anyone celebrating an important milestone. Explore our photo frame collection or visit one of our three San Francisco locations to browse in person.

4. Miniature Frames: Holiday Ornaments with Meaning

Some of the most charming holiday decorations are also the smallest. Miniature frames, sized to hang as ornaments, offer a creative way to bring cherished photographs and artwork to your holiday tree. Imagine a tiny framed wedding portrait, a baby’s first holiday photo, or a vintage image of a loved one hanging among your family’s favorite ornaments.

These little treasures are especially meaningful when collected over time. Add a new framed photograph each year, and eventually your tree becomes a celebration of family history and favorite memories.

Miniature framed ornaments also make wonderful gifts for grandparents, newlyweds, or families celebrating a new addition. Ask our team about miniature frame options suitable for your holiday decorating ideas.

5. Stocking Stuffers: Small Frames, Big Sentiment

Great gifts don’t have to be large to make an impression. Small photo frames are wonderful stocking stuffers, especially when they’re paired with a photograph or tiny piece of artwork chosen specifically for the recipient.

A miniature frame can hold a beloved pet’s portrait, a favorite travel snapshot, or a meaningful moment shared between friends. Small frames also fit beautifully into bookshelves, bedside tables, desks, and other spaces where a larger framed piece might not work.

For something especially thoughtful, consider a small framed handwritten message, a tiny original illustration, or a child’s miniature drawing. These little gifts are easy to display, deeply personal, and often become some of the most treasured presents under the tree.

6. Shadowboxes: Preserve a Special Memory

Some gifts deserve more than a traditional picture frame. For someone who treasures memories and meaningful objects, a custom shadowbox can be an extraordinary gift. Shadowboxes allow three-dimensional items to be displayed alongside photographs, printed materials, and other keepsakes.

Consider creating a display featuring a cherished family heirloom, a meaningful sports collectible, a child’s first pair of shoes, or memorabilia from a special trip. Our team can help develop a custom design that combines thoughtful presentation with conservation techniques to protect the items inside.

It’s a particularly meaningful way to celebrate someone’s passions, accomplishments, or personal history.

7. Gift Cards: The Gift of Creative Possibilities

Not sure what to choose? A Walter Adams Framing gift card gives someone the pleasure of selecting exactly what they love.

Gift cards can be used toward luxury photo frames or a personalized custom framing project. They’re especially thoughtful for art collectors, interior design enthusiasts, new homeowners, or someone who has been meaning to frame a special piece.

A custom framing consultation is an experience in itself. Our expert designers help guide customers through frame styles, matting options, finishes, and preservation techniques to create a display that’s truly their own.

Walter Adams Framing gift cards never expire, so recipients can take their time deciding what they’d like to frame. Purchase a gift card here.
