Behind the Scenes of a Large-Scale Design Project

When Walter Adams Framing first partnered with Acrylicize on a large-scale design project, the scope was already ambitious. Tight timelines, multiple frame sizes, complex logistics, and a high level of finish all demanded careful coordination from the very beginning.

Now, with the full project completed, the scale of what was accomplished has come fully into focus.

In total, the Walter Adams Framing team produced and installed 324 custom frames consisting of eight different sizes. Each one required the same attention to detail and craftsmanship that goes into a single bespoke framing project. From production planning and sourcing to assembly, glazing, transport, and installation, the project became a defining example of what it means to operate as a solutions-oriented custom framing partner for designers and creative teams.

How We Managed a Large-Scale Design Project

Large-scale design projects require far more than production capacity. They require organization, communication, infrastructure, and the ability to manage countless moving parts without losing sight of quality.

Behind the scenes, Walter Adams coordinated an extensive network of vendors, materials, schedules, and workflows to ensure every piece arrived ready for installation.  This ability to orchestrate every detail is a major part of what makes Walter Adams a valuable custom framing partner for designers.

The convenience for clients is having one trusted partner overseeing the entire framing process from start to finish.

The Design Scale

The final numbers tell the story. To complete this custom framing project, our team used:

  • Over 3,000 feet of solid walnut moulding
  • Nearly 2,000 square feet of Optium Museum Acrylic
  • 2,000 square feet of acid free foamboard
  • Almost 2,600 wedges for frame corners
  • More than 1,000 yards of tape for the back dustcovers
  • Almost 700 screws
  • Many weeks of production and assembly labor
  • Dozens of installation hours

For context, 3,000 feet of moulding is nearly the length of 10 football fields placed end to end.

A typical large framing piece—something around 36” x 48”—might require approximately 14 feet of moulding. Many standard custom framing projects use closer to 5–10 feet total. This large-scale design project demanded production on an entirely different level, with eight unique frame sizes requiring precise coordination throughout the process.

Despite the volume, the expectation remained exactly the same: every frame needed to meet the standards Walter Adams Framing is known for.

A Large-Scale Project Powered by Skilled Craftsmanship

What makes this accomplishment especially significant is that Walter Adams Framing is not a massive production warehouse built purely for volume. We are a highly specialized custom framing studio known for craftsmanship, precision, and personal service — qualities that are often difficult to maintain at scale.

Projects of this size are frequently routed toward large production operations, where efficiency can come at the expense of quality and attention to detail. Walter Adams Framing was chosen for a different reason. Our reputation for quality, organization, communication, and ability to operate as a true solutions provider for designers and creative teams made us the top choice.

From production planning and sourcing to logistics, delivery, and installation, the project required far more than frame assembly alone. It demanded a team capable of adapting quickly, solving problems in real time, and maintaining exceptional standards across hundreds of pieces and multiple frame sizes — all while working within an accelerated timeline.

A major part of making that possible was the ability to leverage the shared resources and infrastructure of Capricorn Framing. Walter Adams Framing and Capricorn Framing share the same ownership, allowing both studios to collaborate behind the scenes when projects require additional production capacity, workspace, and manpower. While this remained fully a Walter Adams Framing project, access to both studios’ combined resources created the operational flexibility needed to execute the project successfully without compromising quality.

A Highly Skilled Custom Framing Team

This large-scale design project became a true all-hands-on-deck effort, with highly skilled framers, installers, coordinators, and production staff all contributing throughout the process. Every stage — from cutting and assembly to handling, quality control, logistics, and installation — required precision, communication, and collaboration. The same care given to a single bespoke piece was applied to all 324 frames.

That ability to scale without sacrificing craftsmanship is what continues to distinguish Walter Adams Framing. Clients are not simply hiring a San Francisco frame shop. They are partnering with a team capable of managing complex projects from concept to wall, with the experience, infrastructure, and craftsmanship to deliver at every stage.

Built to Support Designers at Scale

One of the clearest takeaways from the completed project is that Walter Adams Framing is built to support designers not only creatively, but operationally.

Creative firms and designers often face enormous pressure when managing large installations. Timelines shift. Specifications evolve. Logistics become complicated quickly. Having a custom framing partner that can absorb that complexity and keep the process moving is invaluable. That is where Walter Adams Framing continues to stand apart.

Rather than simply fabricating frames, our team approaches projects as a full-service partner. Materials sourcing, production management, glazing coordination, quality control, delivery logistics, and installation are all handled with the goal of making the process seamless for the client. From design to wall, every detail is accounted for.

The Value of a Strong Vendor Network

Another major factor in the project’s success was the strength of Walter Adams Framing’s long-standing vendor relationships.

Large-scale framing projects depend on reliable suppliers, responsive partners, and coordinated scheduling. Walter Adams Framing’s network of trusted vendors made it possible to secure materials, maintain production timelines, and solve challenges quickly as the project evolved.

We worked closely with Acrylicize, who led the creative direction and artwork program, while Hanson Digital Printing, led by Mark Hanson, produced the printed artwork itself. Our team also worked with Farber Art Service for the final art hanging and installation.

That network, combined with internal organization and hands-on craftsmanship, allowed the team to execute at a level typically associated with much larger operations.

Delivering at Every Scale: A True Custom Framing Solutions Provider

With 324 custom frames now completed and installed, the project stands as a milestone for Walter Adams Framing, not simply because of its size, but because of what it represents.

It demonstrates that a highly skilled framing studio can successfully execute large-scale commercial installations without sacrificing quality, communication, or attention to detail. It reinforces Walter Adams Framing’s role as a trusted solutions provider for designers, creative studios, and project teams that need more than just framing. Walter Adams is a partner capable of managing the entire process with confidence.

Whether our team is producing a single bespoke piece or coordinating hundreds of frames across a major installation, the philosophy remains the same. We focus on thoughtful craftsmanship, clear communication, and making the process as seamless as possible for the client.
